Hydration – Why is it important for ADHD brains?
Hydration is part of caring for our bodies AND our ADHD brains. When ADHD brains don’t get the care they need, undesirable symptoms or traits are amplified or get worse.
Hydration is critical for healthy brain function, in part because 75% of brain mass is water. Research shows even mild dehydration negatively impacts cognitive functions—not good for our neurodivergent brains. When we become dehydrated—even for short periods of time—the balance of the elements needed for proper function are impaired and brain cells lose efficiency. (For a nice overview, here's an article from The Women's Brain Health Initiative.)
There is also plenty of anecdotal evidence that being well-hydrated ensures ADHD medications work optimally. I find that people are generally surprised to see how much better they feel when they drink enough water.
Do you know how much water you need each day? Here's the calculation:
Drink a 1/2 ounce for every pound of your body weight.
Add an additional and equal amount of water for each ounce of coffee you drink.
Add another 8oz. for every 30 minutes you spend exercising.
What's your favorite way to stay up on your water intake? I add a little squeeze of fresh lime or lemon, and I keep 32 ounces near me at all times so I don't forget. What’s your favorite visual cue to drink water?
