Do you struggle with “Right vs. Wrong” thinking?

It’s a little more than perfectionism and people pleasing. It’s also about not knowing what done looks like (impaired executive functions), or struggling with a set of social rules we don’t always understand. In any case, all have the effect of keeping us from finishing tasks or reaching goals. I’ve written about “Done is Better Than Perfect”, but here’s another perspective.

Are you getting stuck behind the inertia of right vs. wrong? One trick to combat the inertia of a right vs. wrong rigid thinking is to determine to do the task “wrong.” By wrong I mean that sometimes there is no right or perfect way, there is only your own preference, and we can make choices based solely on our own preferences! This realization was liberating for me. But this might be a little scary at first because it’s a common experience for ADHD folks to have experienced a lot of negative feedback over our lifetime that we’re doing things wrong in one way or another, and much more frequently than for our neurotypical counterparts. This is sometimes referred to as neurodivergent trauma, it’s real, and can be a huge roadblock.

We can also get stuck in the belief that things must be executed perfectly each and every time, even on the smallest of tasks, not recognizing that we can change our minds and do the task differently next time, every time if we choose.

We can change our perspective and begin to view life as an experiment. We can learn to boldly move forward without having things perfectly figured out. Not knowing what the best answer is also means we have the opportunity to learn new ways of doing things.

I would love to hear your perspective!
